XML Basics & Applications

Elizabeth McAulay, UCLA & Karen Coombs, University of Houston

Extensible Markup Language (XML) has become an important standard within the library community where it is used both to represent and exchange data and documents. [Examples here] As with any language, XML has a syntax and vocabulary, but it's easy to learn the basics and to start using XML fairly quickly. In this pre-conference half-day workshop, Karen and Elizabeth will provide a hands-on introduction to XML basics and demonstrate a selection of pertinent areas where e-resources librarians can easily use XML technology. Topics will include:

  • What is XML? Why should you use it?
  • Elements, Attributes, Namespaces, DTDs, and Schemas
  • Data centric and Document centric XML
  • XPath -- How to find your data?
  • Reading / Processing XML to extract pertinent information (OCLC queries)

Marketing/Promoting effective use of e-resources

Barbie Elene Keiser, Barbie E. Keiser Inc.

A marketing-oriented library develops products and services based on its customers' needs, wants, and levels of satisfaction. Development of a realistic and flexible marketing strategy (a comprehensive plan of action designed to meet the needs of an organization operating in a particular environment) is essential. This session is designed to help library staffs understand how to promote the responsible use of e-resources available, utilizing various advanced technologies and techniques, and taking advantage of all opportunities to "cross-sell." Embedding an element of information literacy in every training program (i.e., how what you learn by using one tool or e-resources for one subject can be applied to others) will benefit users throughout their lives and ease the burden on staff. This half-day workshop will review the why and how of marketing, introducing attendees to marketing concepts and principles as they apply to e-resources; a review of marketing techniques available and how to mix and match techniques to achieve desired objectives (in this case, effective use of e-resources); and elements of marketing plans that are in accordance with the expectations of stakeholders from whom you require approval and support. Activities will focus on positioning your library strategically within your community, institution, or organization; raising awareness concerning new products and services while reminding customers about existing ones; and reinforcing your message. Since customers are the reason for libraries? existence, the workshop will help attendees think about defined user populations, the similarities and differences in terms of needs, wants, and expectations, and developing appropriate messages and tools that your library can sustain over time. Equally important is gaining the support of all staff in focusing on the customer and this session will highlight proven for motivating staff to want to participate in these efforts.

Eat that elephant! Strategies and methods for managing SFX

Jamene Brooks-Kieffer, Kansas State University & Sarah Miller, CARLI

Note: This pre-conference is for current SFX customers only. The SFX OpenURL link resolver requires its administrators to apply knowledge of acquisitions, serials, electronic resources, and user experience in a highly specialized environment. Few SFX Administrators have the luxury of attending to their organizations' installations full-time and as a result, specific tasks and local customizations that can optimize SFX for staff and users go undone. During this preconference, you will learn more about three such duties and the decision processes that accompany them. You will practice strategies for addressing these duties in your own SFX installation and take home documentation that will help you continue what you begin in class. You will leave with the secret to eating the SFX elephant! The following topics will be covered:

  • Manage your monthly updates
  • Take charge of your Services Menu with the Simplified Template and Display Logic
  • Decide whether to load your local holdings

You are encouraged to bring your laptop and access your SFX installation during this preconference. The presenters' goal is for you to explore the solutions discussed and connect them to your site's situation in your own installation throughout the session.
